As a Senior Advisor, Jonathan Hoffman shares his expertise after twenty years of experience in government, business, communications and law. At The Chertoff Group he provides counsel regarding defense programs, homeland security, public affairs strategy and crisis communications.
Mr. Hoffman recently served as the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs – the head of communications for the Department of Defense (DoD). In this role he was responsible for DoD strategic communications planning and public affairs execution, was the principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense for all public relations issues and was the chief Pentagon spokesman.
Prior to joining the Department of Defense, Mr. Hoffman served in a similar role at the Department of Homeland Security as the Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs. As the Assistant Secretary, Mr. Hoffman was the Emergency Support Function-15 coordinator for the entire Federal Government in times of national crisis.
Previously, Mr. Hoffman served as a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at DHS, and as the Director of International Programs and Border Security Policy at the White House. Additionally, he served at U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Department of State.
In the private sector, Mr. Hoffman has advised public and private sector clients on a variety of government relations and public affairs issues. Prior to his recent government service, he served as an adjunct professor of Homeland Security at the Citadel and of Military Justice at the Charleston School of Law. Previously, he practiced corporate litigation in New York City. He currently serves in the US Air Force Reserves as a Judge Advocate General.
He is a recipient of both the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service and the Secretary of Homeland Security’s Distinguished Service Medal.
